Sonny Greenwich
One of Canada's top guitarists, the eccentric playing of Sonny Greenwich is always stimulating and usually surprising. He played locally in Toronto, appeared with Charles Lloyd in New York (1965), toured with John Handy (1966-1967), and recorded with Hank Mobley (1967). Greenwich came close to joining Miles Davis in 1969, settled in Quebec (he moved to Montreal in 1974), and went on to lead sessions for Justin Time. -Scott Yanow
Guitarist Sonny Greenwich's Bird of Paradise is influenced a bit by the John Coltrane Quartetof the early '60s, particularly in the chord voicings of pianist Fred Henke. Greenwichperforms a brief atmospheric piece ("Of Stars & Strings"), the Trane-ish "Bird of Paradise," the medium-tempo cooker "Only One Earth," a menacing ballad rendition of Stephen Sondheim's "Not While I'm Around," a swinging "Night and Day," and finally a very slowly developing "Españada." Although not definitive, this is a fine showcase for Greenwich's singing tone and his versatile imagination
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0537/8477/2768/products/525122d4-0770-49af-9934-f36cdb40675a789735992530556227-LARGE_e002d8b6-2ed7-4beb-bef4-5d4678fde682.jpg?v=1615688903
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0537/8477/2768/products/d01f21d1-900e-4161-ad4b-8336c7a86a313434155899528542687-LARGE_9915ec81-1537-46e9-94d7-ee648bc539ad.jpg?v=1615992151
welcome-mother-earth-2
Welcome: Mother Earth
Meantime is: Sonny Greenwich, Sonny Greenwich Jr. (guitar); James Gelfand (keyboards); Al Baculis (bass); Jim Hillman (drums).
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0537/8477/2768/products/79cd7576-1502-4b13-a4f2-939a246354a612510646451211220345-LARGE_390cfab0-fc5b-45e9-9ea9-8c8c4507ab88.jpg?v=1616199084
